Helen Lochhead is an architect and urbanist who combines practice with academic and advisory roles. Her career has focused on the inception, planning, design and delivery of complex urban projects, ranging from city improvement programs to major urban regeneration and waterfront projects, in both Australia and the United States.

Her projects have received numerous awards, including the AIA and AILA Urban Design and Sustainability Awards, the AIA Lloyd Rees Award for Urban Design, and the City of Sydney Lord Mayor’s Prize for urban design excellence. As well as her professional contributions, she has been recognized for the AFR 2019 100 Women of Influence, the Paula Whitman Prize and the NAWIC Vision Award for leadership in the construction industry.

Helen has held numerous influential roles in the industry, the government and universities, including recent roles at the University of New South Wales as dean of the Faculty of Built Environment and pro vice-chancellor of Precincts. In 2019 to 2020 she was president of the Australian Institute of Architects, where she established the Climate Action and Sustainability Taskforce (CAST) to accelerate the profession’s transition to carbon zero.
